Recently Barron’s ran an article saying that investors should be looking at preferred stocks today because yields have increased a half-percentage point on a number of issues over the last month. (See article here) The article list a number of preferreds, but none of them were from utilities. Utilities actually have a history of issuing lots of preferred stocks, however, a number of utilities have taken to calling in their shares to simplify their capital structure. I ran a search through Factset and SNL to search for utility preferreds from the US and Canada. I came up with a list of 58 issues that I have included below. There were actually over 100 other utility preferred stocks out there, but these tended to be tiny issues that might trade only five shares a week. The list below should have enough volume for someone to establish some type of position.
