A recent article in The Economist (see here) discussed the idea of building floating nuclear power plants. (Maybe even submarines.) The idea of having mobile power plants is not new, and obviously have been nuclear powered military ships for years. This is certainly a way to deal with many of the negative issues of having a nuclear plant at a fixed specific location.
While this might be a way to deal with some of the problems of building new reactors, it doesn’t deal with the big nuclear waste problem that the country is still dealing with. A recent episode of “Last Week Tonight” did a really good job of going through the size of the problem in an entertaining manner. (Warning: this piece occasionally uses some colorful language.
